Book Hotel du Marc in Reims, Champagne

There are hotels.
And then there are places that hold the memory of a woman who changed history.

Hidden behind elegant gates in the center of Reims, Hotel du Marc is not simply a residence — it is the private world of Veuve Clicquot, a sanctuary of French art de vivre where heritage, architecture, and Champagne converge.

At Carsons Travel Concierge, we don’t just arrange visits. We curate access to experiences that are normally reserved for the inner circle.

And Hotel du Marc is one of them.

A Mansion Built for Legacy

Constructed in 1840 for Édouard Werlé — successor to Madame Clicquot and former mayor of Reims — Hotel du Marc is an exceptional example of 19th-century neoclassical architecture.

The slightly ochre stone façade radiates understated grandeur. It was designed to impress — but never to boast. That quiet elegance reflects the spirit of the woman whose legacy defines the House.

Surrounded by a private park (once an orchard), the residence stands as one of the rare historic estates in central Reims that survived the devastation of World War I. Though scarred by shell fragments, it escaped destruction — a silent witness to history.

Today, it has been meticulously restored in collaboration with heritage architects. Original ironwork, period hues, and preserved architectural details remain intact, blending with curated contemporary art and refined interiors.

This is not a hotel open for booking.

It is a private residence where Veuve Clicquot welcomes distinguished guests from around the world.

And through Carsons Travel Concierge, our clients have the opportunity to witness this experience.

Who Was Madame Clicquot?

Barbe-Nicole Clicquot-Ponsardin was one of the most visionary women in business history.

Widowed at just 27, she took control of her late husband’s Champagne house in 1805 — at a time when women rarely led enterprises. Instead of retreating, she revolutionized the industry.

She invented the riddling table, perfected clarity in Champagne, expanded international exports, and established one of the first globally recognized luxury brands.

She became known as La Grande Dame de la Champagne.

Her legacy is not simply in the wine — it is in the boldness of her decisions.

From what did Madame Clicquot’s husband die?

François Clicquot died in 1805 at the age of 30. Historical records suggest he passed away after a period of illness, most commonly described as typhoid fever or a similar infectious condition prevalent at the time. His early death left Barbe-Nicole widowed — and unexpectedly at the helm of the family business.

What happened to Madame Clicquot’s daughter?

Madame Clicquot had one daughter, Clémentine. She later married into the Werlé family, ensuring continuity of the House. The business passed to trusted successors who preserved and expanded the brand internationally.

The lineage of leadership remained closely tied to the values Madame Clicquot established: precision, ambition, and uncompromising quality.

Inside Hôtel du Marc: Where Champagne Becomes Intimate

Imagine yourself hosted not as a visitor — but as a privileged guest.

The gates close softly behind you. The city of Reims fades into silence. Before you rises a 19th-century hôtel particulier bathed in warm ochre stone, its façade dignified yet restrained, framed by a private park that once served as an orchard. The residence does not announce itself loudly; it reveals itself gradually.

Inside, polished parquet floors whisper underfoot. Tall windows filter Champagne light into salons adorned with refined neoclassical lines and curated contemporary art. Every room carries the quiet confidence of heritage — not theatrical, not ostentatious — but deeply assured.

Hotel du Marc is not a hotel in the traditional sense. It is a private residence designed to host, to receive, to honor the ritual of Champagne.

And you are welcomed into it.

You descend into the historic cellars of Maison Veuve Clicquot, where the air turns cool and mineral. Bottles rest in silent formation, aging patiently in chalk tunnels that have witnessed centuries of craft. The story of Barbe-Nicole unfolds not as a lesson, but as a living narrative — resilience, precision, audacity.

Then, in an intimate salon or beneath the shade of the garden, a lacquered case is opened with ceremony. Within it, rare vintages — bottles not found on restaurant lists, not displayed in boutiques — are presented. The cork releases with a gentle sigh. Fine bubbles rise like light captured in glass.

Tastings here are not hurried. They are conversations.

Each cuvée reveals texture, tension, elegance. A vintage shaped by frost. Another by long, luminous summers. A prestige cuvée — La Grande Dame — poured slowly, as if time itself were decanted.

Champagne is paired not simply with cuisine, but with intention. Delicate dishes curated to amplify structure and nuance. A note of citrus against minerality. A whisper of brioche echoing the lees. The experience unfolds course by course, glass by glass — a choreography of flavor and refinement.

As evening settles, the residence glows. The salons become more intimate. Candles reflect in the crystal. The park outside stands hushed.

In these moments, you begin to understand what “art de vivre” truly means — not extravagance, but harmony. Not display, but depth. Not volume, but precision.

Hôtel du Marc embodies the spirit of Madame Clicquot herself: bold in vision, disciplined in execution, unwavering in standards.

This is not simply an overnight stay.

It is an immersion into the private world of Champagne’s most remarkable woman — experienced the way it was always meant to be: quietly exceptional.
