Why You Should Visit:
From October 17, 2025 to March 2, 2026, the Fondation Louis Vuitton dedicates its entire space to Gerhard Richter (b. 1932, Dresden), one of the greatest painters of our time. This unprecedented retrospective brings together 270 works from 1962 to 2024—including oil paintings, steel and glass sculptures, watercolors, drawings, and overpainted photographs—offering the most comprehensive panorama of his six-decade career ever staged in France.
Richter, who fled East Germany in 1961 before settling in Cologne, has continually redefined painting. Refusing categorization, he moved between photorealistic portraits, politically charged works, and vast color abstractions. The exhibition’s chronological route allows you to trace his evolution—from his photo-based paintings of the 1960s, through the iconic 48 Portraits at the 1972 Venice Biennale, the somber October 18, 1977 series, and the shimmering Cage Paintings, to his final abstract canvases and glass works after 2017.
Highlights include masterpieces on loan from MoMA and SFMOMA, monumental abstractions, his haunting Birkenau series inspired by Holocaust photographs, and rare watercolors and photographs that reveal the intimacy of his process. Like the Fondation’s previous monographic shows of Basquiat, Rothko, and Hockney, this exhibition positions Richter firmly as one of the defining artists bridging the 20th and 21st centuries.
For art lovers, collectors, and cultural travelers, this is more than an exhibition—it is a journey into the creative spirit of a man often called the Picasso of our age.
