London keeps Christmas as ceremony. Carol services by candlelight, The Nutcracker at Covent Garden, pantomime, and shop windows along Regent Street that draw crowds from early November. Then, on the twenty-fifth, the city stops entirely — no Underground, no buses, almost nothing open.
Our travel designers know which hotels do Christmas lunch properly, which carol services need booking months ahead and which simply reward arriving early, and how to move a family around a capital on the one day of the year it has no public transport at all.

Christmas in London is largely spent indoors, which makes the hotel a bigger decision here than almost anywhere else. On the twenty-fifth it becomes your restaurant, your bar and your only reliable source of a taxi. We book through partner programmes that add breakfast, late checkout and a welcome amenity, and we know which houses take Christmas lunch seriously rather than treating it as a service to be got through.
Every visitor needs a pre-booked slot regardless of which attractions they intend to use, and December weekends sell out well in advance. The event runs daily across its six weeks from 19 November 2026 to 3 January 2027 with the single exception of the twenty-fifth.
London stops more completely than any other capital in Europe. There is no Underground service on the 25 of December, no buses, and effectively no rail. Shops, museums, galleries and Winter Wonderland all close, as do the overwhelming majority of restaurants. What stays open is the hotel — which for one day becomes your dining room, your bar and your only reliable source of a car. The compensation is a city no visitor otherwise sees: Mayfair silent, the parks open, the bridges empty enough to walk down the middle of. A private guided walk through central London on Christmas morning is among the more memorable things we arrange all year, precisely because it cannot be done on any other day. But the day is built in advance or not at all. Lunch tables are reserved months ahead, guides are limited, and a car booked on the twenty-fourth is a car that does not exist.
The 24 of December is not the occasion in Britain that it is in France. Where Paris sits down to Réveillon, London spends the day finishing things: last errands, shops closing through the afternoon, transport thinning out well before midnight. The evening belongs to the churches. Carol services and Midnight Mass at St Paul’s, Westminster Abbey and Westminster Cathedral draw considerable congregations, and the better-known services either require booking or reward arriving early. The Royal Ballet gives a Nutcracker matinee at Covent Garden the same afternoon. Whatever you intend to do on Christmas Day, settle it today — tomorrow nothing opens.
After the complete closure on 25 of December – Christmas Day, on 26 December the sales open, Oxford Street and Knightsbridge fill from early morning, and transport resumes on a reduced Sunday-style timetable. For anyone interested in the shopping it is the day to plan around; for anyone not, it is the day to leave the centre.
The Thames display has required a ticket since 2014, with riverside capacity limited to around 100,000 places, and it sells out. Several bridges close to pedestrians on the night, so where you stand determines how long the walk home is. We more often arrange a private room or a table with a view instead to fully enjoy the firework show on 31 December 2026, midnight.
The Royal Ballet’s run at Covent Garden from 3 December 2026 to 13 January 2027 includes matinees on both 24 and 31 December — two of the most sought-after performances of the London year, and a rare way to build an afternoon around something genuinely festive on days when little else is open. Peter Wright’s production has been in the repertoire since 1984.
London closes more completely than any other European capital. There is no Underground service on 25 December, no buses, and National Rail effectively stops. Shops, museums and the overwhelming majority of restaurants are shut. What remains open are hotels, which serve Christmas lunch throughout, and a small number of restaurants taking reservations made months earlier. The day rewards planning and punishes improvisation — which is precisely why the choice of hotel matters so much here.
The fireworks launch from the London Eye at midnight and run around twelve minutes. Ticketed riverside viewing is limited and sells out; bridges including Westminster and Waterloo close to traffic and in places to pedestrians. Restaurants and private clubs book out from early autumn. We generally recommend a room, a river-facing table or a private boat over standing on the embankment in the cold for four hours.
Taxis are scarce on 24 and 31 December and effectively absent on the twenty-fifth. We arrange private transfers with chauffeurs confirmed in advance for all three days — on Christmas Day in particular, a pre-booked car is not a luxury but the only way to move.
London treats Christmas as ceremony. Carol services fill the churches, The Nutcracker runs at Covent Garden through December and into January, pantomime plays across the city, and the Regent Street and Oxford Street lights draw crowds from early November. Hyde Park Winter Wonderland runs six weeks from mid-November. The season is busier and more theatrical than Paris — until 25 December, when the entire city falls silent.
Almost everything. Shops, museums, galleries, attractions and the great majority of restaurants close on 25 December. Hotels remain open and serve Christmas lunch, and a small number of restaurants take reservations, usually booked months ahead. Winter Wonderland closes for the day. Boxing Day, by contrast, sees the sales open and most of the city return to business.
No. The London Underground does not run on 25 December, buses do not operate, and National Rail services effectively stop. Taxis are extremely limited. A private car booked in advance is the only dependable way to move around the city that day, which is worth arranging well before you travel.
The Royal Ballet performs Peter Wright’s production at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden from 3 December 2026 to 13 January 2027, including matinee performances on both Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. The production has been in the repertoire since 1984 and remains the definitive London Christmas ballet. Tickets for December dates go early; we secure seats in the better parts of the house for clients each season.
The Thames display has been ticketed since 2014, with riverside capacity limited to roughly 100,000 places, and no tickets are sold on the night. Releases have typically opened in mid-October with a second, smaller release in late November. Many travellers prefer a river-facing hotel room, a restaurant with a view or a private boat — all of which we arrange, and all of which are warmer.
Mayfair and St James’s put you within walking distance of the Regent Street lights, the department stores and the theatres, which matters more than usual when public transport stops on the twenty-fifth. Covent Garden suits anyone building the trip around the Royal Opera House. Because Christmas Day in London is spent largely in the hotel, we weight the choice towards houses that take the day seriously — proper lunch, a bar that stays open, and a concierge who can find a car.
Yes, though availability is limited and guides are reserved early. Private walking tours through a genuinely empty city are memorable in a way they cannot be at any other time, and private transfers run throughout. With museums and attractions closed, a guided walk and a well-chosen lunch is usually the shape of the day.
