December in Paris is also the month when everything worth having is spoken for early. Festive suites, Christmas Eve tables at the addresses that matter, private after-hours access — these are settled in October, not December.

Where to Celebrate Christmas in Paris?

Paris offers three distinct kinds of festive Christmas, and choosing between them shapes everything else.

The grand-hotel Christmas. Le Bristol, Plaza Athénée, the Ritz and Le Meurice each build a full festive programme — decorated lobbies, children’s workshops, Christmas Eve dinners by chefs who cook this menu once a year. Suitable for families and for travellers who want the season delivered to their door.

The cultural Christmas. Midnight mass, Pulsations at the Palais Garnier and Rituals at the Opéra Bastille, a private evening in a museum after the public has gone. Suitable for couples and repeat visitors who have already done the landmarks.

The Parisian Christmas. Markets, the food halls at Christmas, an afternoon of window displays, a bûche de Noël chosen at a pâtisserie that takes orders three weeks ahead. Suitable for first visits and for anyone travelling with children.

Most of our clients want elements of all three. The work is in the sequencing.

For those asking, “Where to celebrate Christmas in Paris?” the answer lies in the city’s diverse offerings. Whether you’re attending a midnight mass at Notre-Dame, enjoying a romantic dinner at a luxury hotel, or exploring bustling Christmas markets, Paris provides a myriad of options to celebrate the season in style.

The Tuileries hosts La Magie de Noël, the largest market in central Paris — artisanal stalls, a big wheel, and enough vin chaud to warm a long afternoon. It is busy by design; go early or go with someone who knows which end of the garden to start from.

For something quieter, the market at Square René Viviani sits directly across the Seine from Notre-Dame, a handful of stalls under the oldest tree in Paris.

The markets are best approached as a tasting route rather than a shopping trip. Our private Christmas food tour works through the seasonal specialities — foie gras, oysters, marrons glacés, and the bûche de Noël — with a guide who can tell you which producers are worth the queue.

What we arrange

Galeries Lafayette, Printemps and La Samaritaine unveil their windows in mid-November, and the productions are genuinely elaborate — mechanical scenes commissioned months in advance, often with a designer or a maison attached.

The Galeries Lafayette dome, hung with its annual tree, is the photograph everyone wants. It is also, at four in the afternoon in December, close to impassable.

Paris is a shopper’s paradise, especially during the holiday season. Explore the boutiques along Rue Saint-Honoré and Avenue Montaigne for high-end fashion and unique gifts. Stroll down the Champs-Élysées and admire the breathtaking holiday lights and festive window displays. Parisian boutiques, such as Galeries Lafayette, Printemps, and La Samaritaine, offer a luxurious shopping experience with exclusive holiday collections that cater to every taste. The Christmas markets also offer a variety of handmade crafts and gourmet products.

Paris truly lives up to its nickname, the City of Light, during the holiday season. The Champs-Élysées, Place Vendôme, and Avenue Montaigne are adorned with millions of twinkling lights, creating a magical nighttime spectacle. Don’t miss the illuminated Ferris wheel at Place de la Concorde for a breathtaking view of the city.

Most Paris museums, including the Louvre and Musée d’Orsay, close on 25 December. Department stores and the majority of restaurants also close. Hotel restaurants remain open, Christmas markets generally operate reduced hours, and the city’s parks, illuminations and monuments-from-the-outside are all accessible.

Which is why 25 December is best planned around a table rather than a timetable. Christmas Day lunch at the grand hotels is booked out by early November; we hold relationships that can still find a table after that, but not indefinitely.

The Parisian réveillon is a dinner, not a countdown. The great restaurants serve a single seating, the hotels stage their own celebrations, and the fireworks over the Arc de Triomphe are watched from a reserved terrace or not at all.

We arrange private dining rooms, chef’s tables, terrace access for the midnight display, and transfers on the one night of the year when a taxi is not a plan.

See our Christmas & New Year in Paris itinerary for how a full festive week fits together.

Absolutely.
